June Newsletter from Horace Cheung; New arrival of German wine

First published: 28th June 2012

I am pleased to inform you that a new shipment of German wine has arrived. This batch of wine is rich and full of options for everyone. I hope you will enjoy them. Here is a summery of this shipment:

Resellers are welcome

45 different wines offered by 3 wineries: Wajos from Eller/ Edger, Mosel; Koch & Borell Diehl from Hainfeld, Pfalz. Winery Borell Diehl is new to this side of the world. Their wines are all single varietal.

Eller/ Edger is a twin village in the lower section of Mosel, if you can run like an field athlete; you may be able to reach the other side in just 10 seconds and I did it in 12 seconds ten years ago. The locals call this are the Arena, because of the steep, curved slopes, and it is the home of steepest Riesling vineyards in the Northern Hemisphere: The Mont Calmont. The German authority to promote wine from Mosel often uses the picture of this area with the tiny village next to the river Mosel and those steep vineyards. The terroir is best for a specific style of Riesling. The winemakers from this region have taken to printing the soil type on the labels, alongside the grape type, allowing buyers to easily compare Rieslings from different soils.

Hainfeld is a village in the Pfalz valley; Like Mosel they are one of the thirteen wine regions in Germany. This village is located in the middle of the legendary “weinstrße” (German Wine Street), west of Heidelberg. It is a favourite region for wine lovers and the wines are very fine and inexpensive. The terroir here is best for other style of dry Riesling and many other white and red vine varietals.

Pfalz wines are very different to the wine from Mosel(-Saar-Ruwer) region, which you may have tasted in our previous shipment. The style of wine reflects the direction of wine-making in this region, it is mostly dry, with a wide range in terms of alcohol content, from as low as 11% to the powerful Gewürztraminer; a variety that rich enough to be able to reaches the limit of still wine making, 15% by natural fermentation. I sense that in this region winemakers do not focus much on Riesling, because they know that their land offers something that is better for other varieties.

From these 2 regions, I have collected:

  1. 19 wines from 2011, mostly white, 11 wines from 2010; 50/50, 12 others were 2004 to 2009; mostly red. Such as the beautiful Spätburgunder (Pinot noir),
  2. 3 unique liqueurs: distilled from Spätburgunder, Figs & Wild Peaches,
  3. 6 items in each of these 2 quality levels; Kabinett & Spätlese (for white & red)
  4. 9 wines are dry white wines with 3 of it were late harvest (Spätlese).
  5. 10 Red wines crafted from varietals of St Laurent, Spätburgunder, Schwarzriesling & only Dornfelder is available in both dry & semi-dry.
  6. 2 tasty Rosy wines made from Portugieser & Spätburgunder.
  7. 30 great white wines crafted from varietals of Gewürztraminer, Grauer Burgunder, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Rieslaner, Rivaner, Sylvaner, Scheurebe and of course the Riesling planted on different soil structures,
  8. 2 items are available in each of these 4 quality levels; Auslese, BA., Eiswein & TBA, they are Dessert sweet wines.
